'White Lilies 2' by Alex Katz is a silkscreen measuring 146.1 × 101.6 cm. Two white lily blooms fill the upper half of the composition, their petals outlined in a thin yellow line and anchored by dark anthers and grey stamens at the centre. A single deep-green stem rises diagonally from the lower left, forking near the top and flanked by broad, brushy leaves rendered in overlapping strokes of forest green. The pale mint-to-aqua ground shifts almost imperceptibly from top to bottom, giving the flower a clean, poster-flat presence. Katz has worked this kind of large-scale, close-cropped plant subject since the 1960s, treating botanical forms with the same economy of shape and unmodulated colour he applies to his portraits and Maine landscapes — reducing volume and shadow to the minimum needed for recognition while keeping the image vivid and direct.
