Screenprint in colors on Arches paper - Signed and numbered in pencil - Series: Alex and Ada, the 1960's to the 1980's - Published by Gaultney-Klineman Art, New York // Ada with Sunglasses by Alex Katz is a striking screenprint from 1990, featuring Katz's iconic muse, Ada, rendered in a bold, flat style typical of his portraiture. The subject’s face is simplified into clean, smooth planes, with minimal shading, while her dark sunglasses and parted lips draw immediate attention. Katz uses a limited color palette, emphasizing contrast between the deep green of the sunglasses and the warm tones of Ada’s skin and lips. Her sleek, flowing hair and the serene light blue background create a sense of calm, placing the focus entirely on her expression. This work is part of the Alex and Ada series, capturing moments from the 1960s to the 1980s. Katz's ability to distill personality and intimacy in such simplified forms is a hallmark of his celebrated style.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
