Literature: Cantz 45-56. From the portfolio of 12 etchings with aquatint on wove paper. Signed in pencil and numbered. Co-published by Brooke Alexander/Marlborough Graphics, New York. Printed by Hitoshi Nakazato, New York. // June Ekman's Class 4 is an etching with aquatint on wove paper by Alex Katz, from the portfolio of twelve prints created in 1972 (Cantz 45-56), edition of 50 plus 10 artist's proofs. Delicate hatching defines the sitter's features with an intimacy that distinguishes this plate from its bolder counterparts in the series. Fine cross-hatched passages model the face and hair with subtle precision, creating a sense of softness within the graphic discipline of intaglio. Katz's restraint allows the paper itself to become an active element, its white surface breathing light into the composition and amplifying the portrait's understated tenderness.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
