Literature: Cantz 45-56. From the portfolio of 12 etchings with aquatint on wove paper. Signed in pencil and numbered. Co-published by Brooke Alexander/Marlborough Graphics, New York. Printed by Hitoshi Nakazato, New York. // June Ekman's Class 5 is an etching with aquatint on wove paper by Alex Katz, from the portfolio of twelve prints created in 1972 (Cantz 45-56), edition of 50 plus 10 artist's proofs. A close-cropped composition and bold etched contrasts give this portrait a striking immediacy. The sitter's features are defined by strong tonal oppositions — deep blacks set against open paper — creating a graphic intensity that anticipates Katz's later large-scale paintings. Every line is purposeful, the economy of mark-making lending the image a directness that draws the viewer into an unmediated encounter with the subject's likeness.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
