Silkscreen in colors on Saunders 425 gsm paper. Alex Katz’s White Lilies 6 (2025) is a monumental silkscreen in colors on Saunders 425 gsm paper that exemplifies the artist’s refined, contemporary approach to botanical imagery. Measuring 42 3/4 x 96 inches and issued in an edition of 50, the work presents three white lilies set against a luminous turquoise ground. Katz reduces the flowers to broad, flat planes of color outlined with minimal, confident lines, emphasizing clarity and scale over intricate detail. The elongated horizontal format enhances the rhythmic spacing of the blooms, creating a calm yet striking visual presence. Characteristic of Katz’s practice, the composition balances immediacy and elegance, transforming a simple floral subject into a bold, modern statement.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
