Literature: Cantz 97-110. From the portfolio of 14 aquatints in colors on J. Green Hotpress paper. Signed in pencil and numbered. Co-published by Brooke Alexander/Marlborough Graphics, New York, with the blindstamp of the printer, Prawat Laucheron, New York. // Face of the Poet 1 is the opening colour aquatint of Alex Katz's portfolio of fourteen prints on J. Green Hotpress paper, created in 1978 in an edition of 25 plus 10 artist's proofs (Cantz 97-110). As the inaugural plate, it sets the series' tone with gentle chromatic warmth — soft flesh tones, muted reds, and earthy undertones envelop the sitter in a luminous glow. Katz's confident economy of means establishes the visual grammar that will guide the entire portfolio: flat colour fields, decisive contours, and an unwavering focus on the human face as the primary site of artistic inquiry.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
