Color woodcut on wove paper. Signed and numbered in pencil lower left. Published by Peter Blum Edition, New York. Alex Katz’s Kriti and Vincent (from A Tremor in the Morning) is a woodcut from 1986 that highlights his refined approach to portraiture through reduction and clarity. Two figures are closely framed, their faces overlapping and defined by clean, continuous white lines set against a luminous turquoise field. The simplified features and flattened forms create a calm yet intimate atmosphere, while subtle details—such as hair texture and a patterned tie—anchor the figures in everyday observation. Katz’s ability to balance stylization with presence gives the composition a quiet immediacy. Produced in an edition of 45, the work reflects his distinctive fusion of graphic precision and human connection.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
