Literature: Cantz 45-56. From the portfolio of 12 etchings with aquatint on wove paper. Signed in pencil and numbered. Co-published by Brooke Alexander/Marlborough Graphics, New York. Printed by Hitoshi Nakazato, New York. // June Ekman's Class 1 is the opening etching with aquatint on wove paper from Alex Katz's portfolio of twelve prints, created in 1972 in an edition of 50 plus 10 artist's proofs (Cantz 45-56). As the inaugural plate, it establishes the portfolio's observational intimacy, presenting a close portrait whose precise yet understated line work invites prolonged study. The aquatint ground lends depth and atmosphere, while Katz's characteristic economy of means distils the subject's presence into essential contours. This first encounter sets the contemplative rhythm that will sustain the series, grounding each subsequent plate in Katz's signature blend of graphic clarity and emotional warmth.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
