Image: 49 5/8 x 14in (126 x 35.6 cm). Sheet 56 1/2 x 22in (143.5 x 55.9 cm). // John Ashbery is an aquatint on wove paper by Alex Katz, printed in 1986 in an edition of 25 plus 12 artist's proofs (Cantz 188). The tall, narrow format accentuates a refined portrait of the renowned poet, rendered in Katz's signature minimal, graphic style with precise flesh tones and dark hair set against a plain ground. Co-published by Crown Point Press, California, and printed by Jeryl Parker Editions, New York, the work captures Ashbery's contemplative presence with characteristic economy. A quietly commanding portrait that bridges the worlds of American poetry and visual art.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
