Literature: Cantz 166-178. From the portfolio of 13 vernis mou and aquatints on Hahnemühle paper. Signed in pencil and numbered. Co-published by the artist and Marlborough Graphics, New York. Printed by Crommelynck, Paris. // Give Me Tomorrow 1 is the opening plate of Alex Katz's portfolio of thirteen vernis mou and aquatint prints on Hahnemühle paper, created in 1983 in an edition of 40 plus 10 artist's proofs (Cantz 166-178). As the inaugural sheet, it establishes the portfolio's intimate mood with a portrait that balances economy of line with atmospheric depth. Muted grey-green tones envelop the figure, setting a contemplative cadence for the series that follows. Printed by Crommelynck, Paris, and co-published with Marlborough Graphics, this plate is the threshold through which the viewer enters Katz's sustained meditation on the human face.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
