Color aquatint on Cartiere Magnani Corona 400 g paper - Portfolio: Small Cuts (1954-58/2008) - Literature: Klaus Albrecht Schröder 476-48 - Sheet: 13.75 x 20 inches (34.8 X 50.5 cm) - Image: 10 x 14.5 inches (25.4 x 36 cm) - Hand-signed and numbered by the artist on the front. // Untitled (Flying Carpet) by Alex Katz, a 2008 color aquatint, presents two seated figures on a brightly colored surface, which evokes the imagery of a flying carpet. The figures, one in a light blue and the other in green, face forward in a relaxed position, grounded on a minimalistic background of yellow and light hues. The simplicity of form and flatness of color give the scene a dreamlike quality, as the figures appear suspended, their surroundings abstracted into soft gradients. The print captures Katz's signature minimalist aesthetic, with an emphasis on color and shape to evoke a sense of stillness and contemplation. Created on Cartiere Magnani Corona paper, this limited edition work belongs to Katz’s Small Cuts portfolio.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
