Hand-signed and numbered by Alex Katz; With the Arches watermark. Some minor handling creases, two traces of old mounting on the reverse, otherwise very good condition. Alex Katz’s Alex (1970) is a lithograph that exemplifies the artist’s signature approach to portraiture, characterized by bold simplification and a cool, detached clarity. The composition presents a close-up view of a male face, cropped tightly and rendered with smooth, flat areas of color. The subject wears dark sunglasses that obscure the eyes, creating a sense of distance and anonymity while reflecting subtle environmental details. Katz’s use of clean lines and minimal shading emphasizes surface over depth, aligning with his interest in immediacy and contemporary visual culture. The background, suggesting water and landscape, remains secondary to the striking frontal presence, reinforcing the tension between individuality and stylization.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
