Color woodcut on wove paper. Signed and numbered in pencil lower left. Published by Peter Blum Edition, New York. Alex Katz’s Rackstraw and Peggy (from a Tremor in the Morning) is a woodcut from 1986 that reflects his signature clarity and economy of line. Rendered in a restrained palette, the composition depicts two figures in profile, their features outlined with minimal yet precise cuts that define expression and presence. The softly graduated background contrasts with the crisp white contours, evoking a quiet, intimate exchange beneath lightly sketched foliage. Katz, known for his cool, observational style, reduces detail to essentials while maintaining a strong sense of atmosphere. Issued in an edition of 45, the work exemplifies his exploration of portraiture through graphic simplicity and balance.

What is figurative art?
Sometimes known as Figurativism, figurative art refers to sculptures and paintings that are clearly or specifically derived from real objects, making them representational. The term figurative art is often used in contrast to abstract art. However, since the emergence of abstract art, figurative art has come to describe any form of modern art that has strong references to the real world or actual situations.
