Unique gouache and colored pencil drawing, on wove paper. Hand-signed by artist, Signed and dated in pencil. Series: Eccentric Polygons. Literature: G. 551, A. 105. // An irregular polygon outlined in a thick pink band frames a quietly daring interior: two flat green planes set against a beige bar, a dark teal triangle nested within and a small orange triangle inside that, the whole worked in gouache and coloured pencil with hand-painted edges. Signed in pencil F. Stella '70 at the lower left, this unique drawing offers a rare glimpse of Stella's working process for his celebrated Eccentric Polygons. As a one-off sheet rather than a print, it is a particularly significant piece to acquire from one of the great American post-war abstractionists.

What is Colour Field Painting?

Colour Field Painting is an abstract style characterized by large areas of a single color or simple, solid colors. The term was first used in the 1950s to describe the work of three American Abstract Expressionist painters—Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. Their work emphasized the emotional power of color and the creation of vast, meditative spaces through expansive color fields.
