Mixed Media welded Stainless Steel and Bronze. Signed on reverse. The Decanter (1986) by Frank Stella is a dynamic mixed media sculpture composed of welded stainless steel and bronze, measuring 36 x 26 x 22.5 inches. Created in an edition of just three, this work exemplifies Stella’s evolution from painting into three-dimensional abstraction. The composition is a collision of geometric forms—discs, cones, fans, and curves—layered in space and contrasting in texture and finish. Polished and matte surfaces interact to create visual rhythm and depth, reflecting Stella’s interest in movement, industrial materials, and baroque complexity. Signed on the reverse, The Decanter stands as a sculptural manifestation of Stella’s post-painterly exploration of volume and form.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
