Andy Warhol's Saint Apollonia, 1984 screen print with bold colors and cracked texture effect, blending religious iconography with pop art aesthetics.

Screenprint on Essex Offset Kid Finish paper - Signed and numbered in pencil, bottom left // Saint Apollonia by Andy Warhol, created in 1984, is a limited edition screen print that highlights Warhol's mastery of the medium and his ability to merge religious iconography with pop culture aesthetics. Measuring 76.2 x 55.9 cm, the artwork portrays Saint Apollonia, a Christian martyr, with a striking blend of vibrant colors, including deep blues, bright yellows, and subtle red accents. Warhol’s characteristic use of bold outlines and layered textures transforms the saint’s image into a contemporary pop icon while maintaining the essence of religious reverence. The cracked texture effect applied to the piece adds a sense of historical depth, juxtaposed with Warhol’s modern, graphic approach. This screen print not only reflects Warhol’s fascination with religious themes but also serves as a commentary on the commercialization of sacred figures, illustrating his significant influence on contemporary art.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
