Birmingham Race Riot (F.S. II.3)

Andy Warhol’s Mammy, graphite drawing, shows a simplified line portrait of a woman with a headscarf and hoop earrings, part of the Myths series.

From the Myths Suite - Graphite on handmade paper - Stamped with "The Estate of Andy Warhol and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. " stamps, inscribed 'VF' and numbered '83.0003' (on the reverse) // Andy Warhol's Mammy, created in 1981, is a graphite drawing on handmade paper, part of the Myths series. The portrait features a simplified, linear depiction of a woman with large hoop earrings, a headscarf, and a calm expression. The minimalist line work, characteristic of Warhol's approach, strips the figure down to its essential features, allowing the viewer to focus on the contours and symbolic representation. The figure of the Mammy taps into a loaded cultural iconography from American history, and Warhol, through his pop art lens, engages with this historical imagery in a modern and abstracted form. The drawing is stamped by The Estate of Andy Warhol and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., further verifying its provenance.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
