Joseph Beuys in Memoriam

Andy Warhol's Electric Chair, 1971, screen print in dark purple and orange tones, depicting an empty electric chair in a stark, eerie setting.

Signed in ball-point pen on the verso, dated and stamp-numbered on wove paper - Printed by Silkprint Kettner - Published by Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich // Andy Warhol’s Electric Chair is part of his Death and Disaster series, in which the artist explores themes of mortality, violence, and the media's representation of death. This 1971 screen print portrays an empty electric chair in a stark and haunting setting, emphasizing the cold, mechanical nature of state-sanctioned death. The image is washed in a dark, somber palette, with hues of purple and orange, creating a surreal, almost ghostly atmosphere. Warhol’s use of repetition and mass production techniques heightens the sense of detachment from the subject matter, inviting viewers to reflect on the normalization of violence through constant media exposure. Signed in ball-point pen on the verso and stamp-numbered, this print is both a powerful social commentary and a striking visual work. Published by Bruno Bischofberger and printed by Silkprint Kettner, the Electric Chair series remains one of Warhol’s most provocative and iconic bodies of work.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
