Andy WARHOL | Myths: Mammy, II.262 | Screen-print available for sale on composition gallery

Screenprint in colors with diamond dust on Lenox Museum Board - From series: The Myths - Published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Inc., New York // Andy Warhol's Mammy (1981) is a limited edition screen print with diamond dust from his Myths series, published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Inc., in New York. The work presents a vibrant and stylized portrayal of the “Mammy” figure, a controversial and historically charged symbol within American culture. Warhol’s use of bright, neon colors—contrasted against the deep black background—emphasizes the figure’s exaggerated features, such as hoop earrings, headscarf, and lips, giving the portrait a pop art vibrancy while provoking thought on stereotypes and representation. The addition of diamond dust adds a tactile, shimmering quality, enhancing the print’s visual impact and glamorizing the figure in a way that invites both critique and admiration.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
