Silkscreen by Andy Warhol, 1972, depicting Mao Zedong in bold colors—blue face, green suit—transforming a political figure into pop art.

Screenprint in colours, from the set of ten, on Beckett High White paper - Signed in ball-point pen on the reverse, stamp-numbered - Published by Castelli Graphics and Multiples Inc., New York, with the artist's copyright stamp verso // Andy Warhol's Mao (F. & S. II.99) (1972) is an iconic silkscreen print that exemplifies the artist's exploration of political power and fame through his distinctive Pop Art lens. This limited edition screenprint measures 90.9 x 91 cm and is part of a set of ten, printed on Beckett High White paper. Warhol transforms the image of Chinese Chairman Mao Zedong with his signature bold colors, here using striking blue for the face against a vivid green suit and a teal background. The portrait features Warhol’s familiar gestural strokes, adding an element of dynamism to the flat surface. This work, stamped and signed by Warhol on the reverse, reflects his fascination with celebrity culture and the commercialization of iconic figures. By appropriating Mao's image, Warhol recontextualizes a symbol of political authority into a piece of mass culture, reinforcing his commentary on the intersections of politics, power, and consumerism in contemporary society.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
