Andy Warhol $ (9) screenprint showing nine colorful dollar signs on red background, each in varying hues and brushstroke textures.

Unique screenprint on Lenox Museum Board; Andy Warhol’s $ (9) (1982) is a bold screenprint that exemplifies his fascination with commerce, iconography, and consumer culture. Measuring 40 x 32 inches, this unique print features nine vividly colored dollar signs arranged in a grid over a bright red background. Each dollar sign is rendered with expressive brushstroke textures and contrasting hues, blending the commercial with the painterly. The repetition and variation reflect Warhol’s signature Pop Art approach—elevating mundane symbols into fine art. Part of an edition of 35, this work underscores the artist’s ongoing commentary on capitalism, value, and art as a commodity.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
