Alex Katz, Gray Day, screen-print, close-up of a figure with sunglasses and red cap on a muted beach background.

Screenprint in Colors - Published by Chalk and Vermillion Fine Arts // Gray Day by Alex Katz is a striking screen print in colors that showcases the artist's signature minimalistic yet bold portraiture style. The artwork features a close-up of a figure wearing large sunglasses and a red cap, set against a muted beach landscape. The simplified shapes and flat areas of color, especially in the figure's face and lips, emphasize Katz's focus on modern life and cool detachment. The background, with soft gray skies and a distant coastline, contrasts the vibrant red of the hat, creating a serene yet contemporary atmosphere. Published by Chalk and Vermillion Fine Arts, this piece reflects Katz's consistent exploration of portraiture with a sleek, graphic aesthetic.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
