Woodcut on Somerset Satin White 300gsm fine art paper // Alex Katz's Ariel 4, 5 (Suite) (2021) is a limited edition woodcut print that demonstrates his expertise in capturing the essence of portraiture with bold simplicity and elegance. The diptych, printed on Somerset Satin White 300gsm fine art paper, features two distinct portraits of Ariel, each measuring 45.7 x 40 cm. The left portrait presents Ariel against a warm beige background, while the right portrait contrasts with a vibrant red background. Both images highlight Katz's characteristic use of flat planes of color and clean, minimalist lines to emphasize the contours of the face and hair. The woodcut technique imparts a textured quality, with the natural grain of the wood subtly visible, adding depth and a tactile dimension to the prints. Katz’s reduction of details and focus on essential forms lend the work a timeless and graphic quality, capturing the subject's elegance and poise in an iconic manner. The suite exemplifies Katz's unique ability to merge modernist simplicity with expressive portraiture.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
