Robert MOTHERWELL | Untitled 2 from The Basque Suite | Screen-print, 1970-71 — available on Composition Gallery

Screenprint in colors on J.B. Green paper. Initialed in pencil and numbered. Published by Marlborough Graphics Inc., New York, and printed by Kelpra Studio, London, bearing the artist’s blindstamp. Literature: Engberg/Banach 79-88. Image: 56.5 × 43.5 cm (22 1/4 × 17 1/8 in). Sheet: 103.5 × 71.8 cm (40 3/4 × 28 1/4 in). // Untitled 2 is the most luminous and open composition in The Basque Suite. Two dark diagonal bars form the recurring A-frame motif against a light cerulean blue ground that fills the image area like a boundless sky. Nestled within the triangular gap beneath the apex, a brilliant deep ultramarine teardrop shape glows with concentrated intensity, creating a jewel-like focal point. A horizontal black bar anchors the base, grounding the airy composition. Where other plates in the suite convey mourning through density and darkness, this print achieves its elegiac quality through openness and breath. Printed on J.B.

Who are the American Abstract Artists (AAA) ?

American Abstract Artists (AAA) is an organization founded in New York City in 1936 to promote abstract art and its appreciation in the United States. At a time when abstract art faced strong opposition from critics, the AAA provided crucial exhibition opportunities for abstract artists, helping to foster the growth and acceptance of the movement.
