Untitled 9 from The Basque Suite

Robert MOTHERWELL | Untitled 10 from The Basque Suite | Screen-print, 1970-71 — available on Composition Gallery

Screenprint in colors on J.B. Green paper. Initialed in pencil and numbered. Published by Marlborough Graphics Inc., New York, and printed by Kelpra Studio, London, bearing the artist’s blindstamp. Literature: Engberg/Banach 79-88. Image: 56.5 × 43.5 cm (22 1/4 × 17 1/8 in). Sheet: 103.5 × 71.8 cm (40 3/4 × 28 1/4 in). // In this concluding plate of The Basque Suite, Robert Motherwell raises two massive black diagonal bars that converge at the apex in an architectural A-frame, their ragged edges betraying the physical force of his gesture. A saturated yellow-ochre rectangle anchors the base, grounding the dark forms against the untouched white of the J.B. Green paper. The composition is deliberately sparse, concentrating all energy in the monumental black structure and its luminous pedestal. Printed by Kelpra Studio in London and initialed by the artist, this screenprint distils Motherwell's elegiac vocabulary into a single powerful confrontation between weight and light.

What is automatism?

Automatism refers to a technique in the creative process that accesses material from the unconscious or subconscious mind. It is based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic method of free association. Artists value this process for its ability to inspire creative thought and spontaneous creation.
