Soot-Black Stone, #5 by Robert Motherwell, created in 1975, is the final print in his contemplative Soot-Black Stone lithograph series. Printed on handmade Georges Duchêne Hawthorne of Larroque paper, the composition centers a pale, textured stone-like form within a deep black field. Minimalist curved white lines gently frame the form, evoking a subtle human presence or spatial boundaries. With this restrained visual language, Motherwell achieves a powerful sense of stillness and introspection. Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, the work is a poignant conclusion to a series focused on materiality, absence, and the poetic potential of form.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
