Original Lithograph and Chine Applique on Paper - Published by The Limited Editions Club New York - Suite: The Octavio Paz Suite // Nocturne II (from Octavio Paz suite) by Robert Motherwell, created in 1988, is a lithograph with chine appliqué that reflects the artist's signature abstract expressionist style. This piece, published by The Limited Editions Club in New York, is part of a suite inspired by the poetry of Octavio Paz. The work features a bold, dark form that dominates the composition, evoking a sense of mystery and introspection. The inky, irregular shape contrasts sharply against the light background, creating a meditative space that invites contemplation. Motherwell’s minimalistic approach captures the essence of Paz’s poetic themes, exploring depth, shadow, and the unspoken.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
