Robert MOTHERWELL | Redness of Red | Mixed media, 1985 — available on Composition Gallery

Original lithograph, screenprint and collage printed in 10 colors on white Arches Cover, white BFK Rives, and red Moriki handmade paper. Edition of 100 (overall edition of 152), numbered in pencil lower right. Sheet size: 61.0 x 40.6 cm (24 x 16 in) Image size: 61.0 x 40.6 cm (24 x 16 in) Frame size: 91.4 x 73.7 x 2.9 cm (36 x 29 x 1 1/8 in)// Redness of Red is one of Motherwell's most complex and layered prints, combining lithography, screenprint, and collage across ten colours on three distinct papers — white Arches Cover, white BFK Rives, and red Moriki handmade paper. The dominant deep-red field, saturated and unyielding, is disrupted by collaged fragments of black, cream, and orange that recall the torn-paper spontaneity of his studio practice. This interplay between the monumental colour plane and the intimate, hand-assembled collage elements produces a work of rare textural and chromatic richness. As a late summation of Motherwell's lifelong dialogue between European modernism and American scale, the print holds a commanding place in his graphic oeuvre.

What is Colour Field Painting?

Colour Field Painting is an abstract style characterized by large areas of a single color or simple, solid colors. The term was first used in the 1950s to describe the work of three American Abstract Expressionist painters—Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. Their work emphasized the emotional power of color and the creation of vast, meditative spaces through expansive color fields.
