'Game of Chance' by Robert Motherwell is a collage measuring 100.3 × 80 cm, made in 1987. A saturated red field anchors the composition, framed on the left and bottom by thick black bands and flanked on the right by a deep navy blue rectangle edged with a narrow cyan stripe. Against this structure, a ragged white vertical form tears upward through the red — its irregular, hand-torn edge contrasting with the geometry around it. At its centre sits a small fragment of printed text, folded into a triangular shape and marked with a single blue dot, the sole element of collaged paper ephemera visible in the work. Motherwell spent much of his career working across painting and printmaking, and this piece reflects his sustained practice of collage — a medium he treated as seriously as either. The spontaneous quality of the torn white shape sits alongside the deliberate architecture of the colour fields, a tension consistent with his remark that creation comes first and analysis follows.
