'Neal from Children Walking' by Julian Opie is an installation measuring 73.9 × 45.7 × 2.5 cm. The work depicts a single child-like figure mid-stride, rendered in Opie's signature flat graphic style: a black outline containing a yellow top, blue shorts, and dark shoes against a pale grey ground, with a layered shadow cast behind the form that amplifies its shallow three-dimensional depth. Opie, associated with the New British Sculpture movement, built his visual language from classical portraiture, Japanese woodblock prints, and billboard graphics — sources that converge here in a figure stripped of individual features yet unmistakably animate. 'Neal' belongs to the 'Children Walking' series, in which Opie applies his reductive sign-like approach to the specific subject of children in motion, using simplified silhouettes and flat colour to transform an everyday act into something close to a pictogram.
