'Muhammad from Children Walking' by Julian Opie is an installation measuring 74.9 × 47.6 × 2.5 cm. A lone figure — a boy in a blue cap, blue T-shirt, and white shorts — stands in three-quarter profile against a blush-pink ground, rendered in Opie's signature flat-colour style with bold black outlines. The shallow depth of the work gives it a physical presence that separates it from a flat print, while the muted shadow cast behind the figure adds a subtle layering effect. Opie, a central figure in the New British Sculpture movement, has long stripped portraiture down to its most legible elements, drawing on Japanese woodblock conventions and the visual economy of billboard graphics. 'Muhammad' belongs to his recurring series of anonymous yet individualised pedestrian figures, where identity is suggested through clothing, posture, and gait rather than facial detail.
