'Komang, beach vendor' by Julian Opie is a mixed media work from 2002 depicting a close-cropped portrait of a figure wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat banded in stripes of blue, red, yellow, and cream. The face is rendered in Opie's signature reductive style — flat areas of warm brown skin delineated by bold black outlines, with facial features reduced to minimal marks. The background is split between sage green and pale blue. The title's specificity is characteristic of Opie's portraiture practice: rather than generic figure studies, his subjects are named and located, a method rooted in his engagement with classical portraiture traditions and the graphic economy of Japanese woodblock prints.
