Christo and Jeanne-Claude Documenta Kassel KA-D68 inkjet print showing a tall cylindrical air structure anchored by cables

Original photograph by Wolfgang Volz, Signed "Volz" and "Christo et Jean-Claude". Image dimension 37 × 28.5 cm; Sheet dimension 56 × 44 cm. Literature: Jacob Baal-Teshuva. Christo and Jean-Claude mit Fotografien von Wolfgang Volz. Cologne, 2001, p. 29-33 (project description). Documenta Kassel KA-D68 by Christo and Jeanne-Claude captures one of their lesser-known but striking environmental interventions: a massive, cylindrical air package installation at the 1968 Documenta in Kassel. Suspended vertically and anchored by cables, the form rises skyward like a silent, inflated monument. Photographed by Wolfgang Volz, a long-time collaborator, the image emphasizes the ephemeral and monumental nature of their art. This print reflects Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s exploration of space, tension, and the transformation of everyday landscapes into temporary spectacles. As with many of their works, the structure was temporary, underscoring their philosophy of impermanence and immediacy in art.

What is Nouveau Realism?

Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
