Edition of 50 hand-signed and 450 unsigned prints. Hand-signed and dated.
'Betty' by Gerhard Richter is an offset print from 1991, measuring 84 × 59.5 cm. It reproduces Richter's celebrated 1988 oil painting of the same name: a young woman — his daughter Betty — seen from behind, her blonde hair pinned up, turning away from the viewer against a near-black ground. The floral-patterned coat in deep red and white dominates the lower half of the composition. The turned pose, which recurs across Richter's photo-paintings, refuses any straightforward reading of the subject's identity or expression. Richter began working from photographs in the early 1960s, using found and personal images to interrogate what painting can and cannot convey. This print, hand-numbered and signed, makes that widely recognised image available in edition form, transferring the painted surface's warm tones and soft focus into the offset medium.

What is Gestural?
Gestural art is a term that describes painting with freely sweeping brushstrokes. The primary goal of gestural art is to allow the artist to physically express emotional impulses. The varied, yet expressive paint marks are intended to convey the artist's inner thoughts and emotions, which viewers are believed to understand through the dynamic and spontaneous application of paint.
