Suite of Smile; Published by Lococo Fine Art Publisher St. Louis Missouri; Original digital print on Crane Museo Max paper; Hand signed by Katz // Ursula by Alex Katz, a digital print created in 2017, features a minimalist black-and-white portrait of a woman with a poised expression, set against a stark black background. Katz’s distinctive flat, simplified forms and use of tonal contrast highlight the subject's serene gaze and subtle smile, capturing a moment of quiet introspection. The smooth rendering and lack of visible brushstrokes give the image a clean, almost photographic quality, while the stark contrast between light and shadow adds depth to the otherwise simplified portrayal. This piece reflects Katz’s skill in distilling personality through minimalist representation.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
