Signed and numbered lower right in pencil // Alex Katz's The Swimmer (1974) is an aquatint print that highlights his minimalist approach and focus on the human figure. The artwork depicts a close-up of a swimmer’s face partially submerged in water, with eyes closed, evoking a sense of calm and introspection. Katz’s use of black, white, and gray tones emphasizes the contrast between light and shadow, capturing the reflective surface of the water and the subtle contours of the swimmer’s features. The simplified shapes and smooth gradients create a serene atmosphere, characteristic of Katz’s ability to convey emotion and stillness through minimal detail. The print is signed and numbered in pencil in the lower right corner, affirming its authenticity and limited edition status.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
