The scarce soft-ground etching, on Somerset wove paper. Signed and numbered in pencil. Printed by Jennifer Melby, published by the Artist, New York. Literature: Schröder 125. Alex Katz’s Seated Man (Schröder 125) (1980) is a minimalist yet expressive soft-ground etching that captures a male figure in profile with Katz’s characteristic economy of line. Rendered in a sparse, linear style, the portrait emphasizes the subject’s contemplative expression and stylized features. The absence of background or shading focuses attention entirely on the figure’s gesture and presence. This rare print—produced in an edition of only 20—reflects Katz’s enduring interest in portraiture and his ability to evoke personality with striking simplicity.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
