Sol LeWitt Cubes in Color on Color Red/Orange linoleum on paper showing orange cube structure on red background

Linoleo on Paper. Not Signed. Cubes in Color on Color (Red/Orange) by Sol LeWitt is a 2003 linoleum print on paper that exemplifies his systematic and conceptual approach to geometric abstraction. A cube formed by orange lines appears suspended on a saturated red background, pushing the boundaries of spatial illusion through minimal visual elements. The limited yet vivid color palette reinforces LeWitt’s emphasis on structure over representation. In this work, as in much of his art, the process and system behind the creation are as significant as the visual result, inviting viewers to contemplate the tension between form, perception, and color relationships.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
