Sol LEWITT | Black lines in Four Directions on Colors | Silkscreen, 1991 — available on Composition Gallery

Portfolio of 5 original color silkscreens. // This rare portfolio of five original colour silkscreens by Sol LeWitt explores the systematic interplay of black lines drawn in four directions across richly saturated colour fields. Each sheet presents a different deep-toned ground — burgundy, teal, violet, emerald, and olive — overlaid with fine parallel lines that create subtle moiré effects and optical depth. Printed in an intimate edition of thirty, this portfolio exemplifies LeWitt's Minimalist rigour and his ability to generate visual complexity from deceptively simple rules. A significant work for collectors of postwar American abstraction.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
