Archival pigment inks on Cotton Rag 315 gsm fine art paper. Hand signed and numbered in pencil. White Lotus 1 by Alex Katz, produced in 2023, is a bold archival pigment print exemplifying his refined and reductive portrait style. The work presents two figures in partial profile—one male and one female—both set against a vivid light blue background. The woman, wearing sunglasses, appears contemplative, while the man gazes forward with a faint, self-assured expression. Katz's use of smooth brushwork, flattened forms, and sharp outlines evokes a stylized immediacy, stripping the subjects of extraneous detail while preserving a sense of intimacy. This pairing hints at a quiet narrative, capturing the emotional reserve and cool elegance that define Katz’s portraits.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
