Signed and numbered // Reflection II by Alex Katz is a limited edition etching from 2011. This work exhibits Katz’s mastery of abstraction, using bold contrasts between dark, silhouetted shapes and a gradient blue background to evoke the shimmering quality of a reflection in water. The composition features a dynamic play of positive and negative space, with black shapes resembling tree branches or natural forms partially obscuring the serene blue beneath. The simplicity of the forms enhances the sense of calm and contemplation while drawing attention to the texture and visual rhythm of the work. Measuring 104 × 78.7 cm (40.9 × 31 in), this large-scale print is signed and numbered by the artist. Katz's use of silhouette and minimal color in Reflection II continues his exploration of form and environment, offering a meditative take on nature through abstraction.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
