Signed, dated and inscribed to verso ‘Sam Francis 1978 For Brian Love Sam’. This work is registered in the Sam Francis: Online Catalogue Raisonné Project as number SF78-1010. Untitled (SF78-1010) by Sam Francis is a 1978 acrylic on paper that exemplifies the artist’s luminous and spontaneous approach to abstraction. Layers of saturated blues, greens, turquoise, purple, and vivid red splashes spread across the paper, balanced by areas of untouched white that function as active compositional elements rather than empty space. Francis applied fluid paint with energetic gestures, allowing color to bloom, drip, and overlap, creating a sense of movement and light. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, and East Asian aesthetics, his work explores the relationship between color, space, and perception. This intimate composition is signed, dated, and inscribed on the reverse, “For Brian Love Sam,” and is registered in the Sam Francis: Online Catalogue Raisonné Project as SF78-1010.

What is Tachisme?
Tachisme is a French abstract painting style that gained popularity between 1940 and 1950, often seen as the European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism. However, there are stylistic differences between the two. Tachisme, which emerged from Art Informel, rejected geometric abstraction in favor of more intuitive and spontaneous expression. It was a reaction against the structured forms of Cubism and is closely related to Informalism. Tachisme emphasizes gestural brushwork, irregular forms, and a focus on the process of painting itself.
