Original mixed media print in colors with embossing on Arches paper - Published by Editions Canada - Suite: Bedized Pudding Canadian - Hand signed by Appel in pencil // Karel Appel's Face (1979) is a striking mixed media print that showcases his bold and expressive approach to portraiture. This limited edition print, measuring 30.6 x 22 inches, is created using vibrant colors and embossing on Arches paper, which adds depth and texture to the piece. The artwork features an abstract, distorted face with exaggerated features, including wide eyes, a prominent nose, and a toothy grin. The use of thick, gestural brushstrokes and the layering of colors—reds, blues, and whites against a warm pink and green background—creates a sense of intensity and spontaneity, characteristic of Appel's style. The print is part of the Bedized Pudding Canadian suite, published by Editions Canada, and is hand-signed by the artist in pencil. Appel's playful yet chaotic aesthetic is evident, inviting viewers to engage with the emotional and visual energy emanating from the portrait. This piece is a testament to Appel's position as a key figure in post-war European avant-garde art.

What is the CoBrA movement?
CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
