« My verses stand gawping a bit. I never get used to this. They've lived here long enough. »
Hugo Claus
He was a central figure in the Flemish literary movement and known for his exploration of the complexities of human nature, often delving into themes of love, death, identity, and the burdens of history.

« Go now, verses, on your light feet, you have not trodden hard on the old earth where the graves laugh when they see their guests, the one corpse stacked on top of the other. »
Hugo Claus

His most famous novel, The Sorrow of Belgium (1983), is considered a masterpiece of Belgian literature. In addition to his literary achievements, Claus was also an accomplished painter and filmmaker, reflecting his diverse creative talents. What is the CoBrA movement?

What is the CoBrA movement?

CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
