'Un poème dans chaque livre' by Joan Miró is an etching and aquatint from 1956, measuring 13.5 × 31 cm, and is designated an épreuve d'artiste — an artist's proof outside the main edition — as inscribed in pencil below the image alongside Miró's signature. The horizontal composition is populated by Miró's characteristic cast of biomorphic figures: a large black form with twin red-ringed eyes dominates the left, while a rounder, blue-grey face with matching red pupils anchors the right. Between them, spiky star-burst marks, an hourglass silhouette, and a columnar figure with coloured bands punctuate a warm ochre ground rendered through dense aquatint hatching. By 1956, Miró had been working in printmaking for decades and was deepening his engagement with intaglio techniques at the Maeght atelier, producing works in which his Surrealist visual language — creatures, stars, and ambiguous symbols — translated with particular directness into the bitten line and tonal wash of the etched plate.
