Etching and aquatint in colors on wove paper. Signed in pencil, dated '1953' and numbered. Published/printed by Atelier Lacourière/Maeght, Paris. Literature: Dupin 92. Plate 9 1/4 x 11 3/4in (23.5 x 29.8 cm). Sheet 14 7/8 x 21 1/4in (37.8 x 54 cm). Joan Miró’s One plate, from Série III (1952–53) is an etching and aquatint that exemplifies the artist’s poetic abstraction and refined graphic language. The composition unfolds across a light ground, animated by delicate, spontaneous lines and textured black forms that arc across the surface. A vivid red circle anchors the image, acting as a focal point amid a constellation of symbols and marks. Miró combines gestural drawing with areas of tonal variation, creating a balance between control and chance inherent to the printmaking process. The imagery evokes a dreamlike, almost cosmic landscape, where signs, figures, and abstract elements coexist. Produced at Atelier Lacourière in Paris, the work reflects Miró’s mastery of printmaking and his ability to distill complex ideas into a playful yet evocative visual vocabulary.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
