Lithograph and collage - Edited by Madison Museum of contemporary art // Dutch Hearts by Jim Dine, created in 1970, is a limited edition lithograph and collage that highlights the artist's fascination with emotionally resonant symbols. This mixed media piece measures 42 x 51 cm and showcases Dine's recurring heart motif, rendered in soft green hues against a textured and speckled background of warm and cool tones. The simplicity of the two hearts, placed on opposite corners, evokes a sense of intimacy and personal meaning, a theme central to Dine’s work. The use of mixed media adds texture and depth, making the artwork feel dynamic and tactile. This piece reflects Dine’s ability to infuse familiar symbols, such as the heart, with emotional and symbolic weight, bridging the gap between Pop Art and Neo-Dada influences.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
