The Robe goes to Town

Jim Dine Brush Drawn on Stones #5, 2010 lithograph depicting two worn paintbrushes in monochrome, set against a textured background.

One colour lithograph on natural Inomachi Nacre, 30 x 22 inches/76.2 x 56 cm., edition 20, signed and numbered, 2010 // Brush Drawn on Stones #5 by Jim Dine, created in 2010, is a lithograph that focuses on two well-worn paintbrushes positioned upright, set against a rough, textured background. Rendered in a monochromatic palette, the brushes, with their bristles splayed and irregular, evoke a sense of past creative work and experience. Dine’s detailed depiction captures the physicality and character of these everyday tools, elevating them to symbols of artistic labor and craftsmanship. The lithograph’s rough, organic textures add a tactile quality, suggesting both the medium's natural grain and the artist’s hand. Limited to an edition of 20, each print is signed and numbered, reflecting Dine’s unique approach to blending mundane objects with expressive depth.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
