Christo Javacheff's Valley Curtain S/W photograph, 1972, black-and-white image of fabric curtain across a valley near Rifle, Colorado.

Valley Curtain, Rifle, Colorado - Photograph on Alu Dibond - Christo and Jeanne-Claude - Photographer: W.Volz, signed // Valley Curtain S/W by Christo Javacheff, captured in 1972, is a black-and-white photograph documenting one of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s iconic large-scale environmental installations. The image, taken by photographer Wolfgang Volz and signed by the artists, showcases the massive fabric curtain stretched across a valley near Rifle, Colorado. The monochrome palette emphasizes the dramatic interaction between the natural landscape and the bold, artificial structure. The billowing curtain contrasts sharply with the rugged terrain, creating a powerful visual tension that highlights the monumental and temporary nature of the installation. This photograph, mounted on Alu Dibond, preserves the essence of the moment and the landscape it transformed.

What is site specific art?

Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
