Aphorismen V by Antonio Saura is a 1973 serigraph that demonstrates the artist’s vivid and expressive reinterpretation of the human face. The composition presents a stylized head emerging from a dark background, rendered with energetic black lines and bold areas of color including yellow, red, blue, and green. The distorted features, exaggerated eyes, and wide, uneasy grin give the figure a theatrical and almost mask-like presence. Saura often explored the human figure as a vehicle for psychological tension and symbolic meaning, combining gestural drawing with striking color contrasts. Part of the Aphorismen series, the work reflects his interest in spontaneous mark-making and emotional intensity. Printed in an edition of 115 with additional artist and hors commerce impressions, the serigraph highlights Saura’s dynamic graphic language.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
